OUR BEGINNINGS

Near the end of World War II, Bill Kalter, a private in the U.S. Army, was assigned to the typing pool, having been an excellent typist. He was part of a group typing a long list of thousands of names of GIs being sent home from the European theater. After a day or two, Bill noticed that nobody was really checking the list, so he put his name on it and went home.

After returning home, Bill landed a job with Keystone Bolt and Nut Co. in New York. He started in the warehouse, and after about six months he felt he learned the business. He went in to see the boss and asked if he could become an outside salesman. He was asked several highly technical questions that he couldn’t answer, and was turned down. So he quit and started his own business.

Thus was the beginning of Manufacturer’s Hardware Specialty Corp. The year was 1947, and the company began essentially in a phone booth. Manufacturers Hardware grew to become one of the largest fastener distributors in the metropolitan New York area.

 

H-O-T DRILL SCREWS

In the late 1960s, a company called Illinois Tool Works invented a new type of screw called TEKS. Around this time, Bill’s son Ed joined the business. Ed immediately recognized the revolutionary new screw as the greatest invention in fasteners to come along.

In short order, The House of TEKS was born, a division of Manufactures Hardware Specialty Corp., now known as H-O-T Drill Screws, selling to distributors throughout the United States and Canada.

 

HD Screws

Today HD Screws stocks and distributes a complete line of fasteners and specializes in self-drilling screws.  Our line of H-O-T Self-Drilling Screws maintains the world's largest inventory of self-drilling screws in steel zinc plated, 410 hard stainless steel, 300 series stainless steel and 7075T6 aluminum. There are close to 5,000 different sizes in stock, including up to 3/8 diameters, # 5 drill points, and 10 inches long and all are available with bonded sealing washers attached.

Bill Kalter, founder of H-O-T Drill Screws, passed away in 1995, but his son Ed and grandson Adam continue to run the family business. The Company still has many original customers from the 1940s and 1950s, attesting to the best customer service in the fastener industry.
